A Perfect Day of Big Waves – Free
Ride 2007 – Peniche Portugal
The last day of the Free ride event, at Supertubos
Beach was surely one of the best days in the history of the
competition. The perfect Scenario, excellent waves ( an average
of 2,5 meters), sunshine, large numbers of spectators on the
beach, and the performance of the riders was the best ever.
The ingredients all together made Portugal one of the best hosts
in the world for this event.
There were a lot of spectators, about 3.500
people~, to see radical manueuvers, and the opinion was unanimous,
a very good show, spectacular stands.
In the category of Sit down Jimmy Vasser (SA)
went to the final with Pierre Maxient, and won, by only a few
points. The Third position was for the Spanish rider Cristobal
Bejeiro.
In the stand up category, the world champion
Pierre Maxient, that competes in both categories was eliminated
in the 1/8 finals. The Final on this category was disputed between
Ross Champion (USA) and Giles Beumier (Fr) that wowed the public
with radical moves and phenomenal tricks. The Jury had a difficult
job deciding the winner, because both pilots had tremendous
runs. In a close call Ross Champion won .
The Portuguese pilots, Carlos Matos and Luis
Silva made an amazing showing, the Portuguese crowd was a huge
extra help. Carlos Matos was the best Portuguese rider, he made
it all the way to the 1/8 finals. A very good result!
« This year a huge crowed showed up, two
days of pure adrenaline and radical manuevers and emotion, with
Riders showing high standards of performances» said Luis
Centeno Fragoso, Vice President of IFWA, on the final day.
Free ride is not a well known sport in Portugal,
but over the years it has come to gain popularity, was we can
see with the increasing number of competitors and spectators
over the years.
Portugal is «on wave » of big sport’s
events.
