Welcome to Itajaí, city of the 9th Jet
Waves
Itajaí city, in
Santa Catarina, welcome this year, for the first time, the Jet
Waves, Brazilian event of the Freeride World Championship. The
ninth edition of the event will be held on Brava Beach from
September 5th to 7th.
Located in Itajaí Valley, 91 km away from Florianópolis,
the city was chosen to host the Jet Waves due to its excellent
natural conditions for the competition and structure to receive
competitors and public comfortingly. Also, the local beautifulness
was one irrestible reason to choose the city.
Germans and Portuguese inhabitants from the Açores Island
colonized Itajaí at the beginning of the 19th century.
Nowadays, Itajaí still keeps a charming architecture
from these countries and occupants. Near the city center, a
beautiful panoramic view over the city can be appreciated on
the top of Morro da Cruz.
Beyond Brava Beach, famous for its long prestine white sand
beach and clear water, some places deserve to be visited: Cabeçudas
beach, scenario of free-flying and sailing competitions; Atalaia
beach, redoubt for surfers ; and the beaches of Jeremias, Morcego
and Amores, great for swimming.
Other local attractions are Bico do Papagaio (Parrot Beak) natural
sculpture and Caverna do Morcego (Bat Cave), where a sambaqui
(shell-mountains) was recently found, confirming the indigenous
occupancy in the area centuries ago.
For those extending the stay until October, Itajaí is
the site of Marejada, the biggest Portuguese festival in Brazil.
The festival gather fado (music of Portugal) shows, typical
dances and other folklore presentations, typical bands and Portuguese
recipes together with much beer and wine. Marejada festival
lasts 15 days and belongs to the Oktoberfest (Beer Festival).
